Choosing the wrong water pump for your irrigation setup is one of the most expensive mistakes a farmer can make. The right pump is defined by three variables: flow rate, head pressure, and fuel type.

Flow rate (LPM) Calculate your peak irrigation demand in litres per minute. A 1-acre paddy field at peak requirement needs roughly 200–250 LPM. Add 20% headroom for losses. Never buy to exact minimum — pumps throttled at max capacity degrade fast.

Head pressure (metres) Head pressure is the vertical height the pump must push water. For every 10 metres of elevation, you need approximately 1 bar of pressure. If your water source is 8 metres below field level and your drip system needs 2 bar, you need a pump rated for at least 3.5 bar total.

Centrifugal vs. submersible Centrifugal pumps (surface-mounted) work for open wells and ponds within 8 metres of suction depth. Beyond that, submersible pumps are required. For borewell depths beyond 30 metres, only submersible models are viable.

Fuel type Diesel pumps are cheapest to run but require more maintenance. Petrol engines start easier and suit intermittent use. For daily 6–8 hour operation, diesel is clearly more economical over 3+ years.
